Waste in action

Compost Doctor Service

The Compost Doctor Service provides free expert help and advice to East Sussex residents on how to compost successfully at home from getting started, choosing the right bin (including from the range of reduced-price units offered by the County, Borough, & District Councils), to getting the most out of a composting system. As well as providing a helpline service, the doctors also make home visits; hold workshops; and can attend local events with a stall display.

The service was originally set up in August 2007 using Waste Performance & Efficiency Grant funding secured by East Sussex County Council working with Resource Futures Ltd. Following the successful award of the EU Interreg IVa funding, the Compost Doctor Service has been able to continue and develop its activities from May 2008 to the end March 2011. The Compost Doctors have attended more than 150 events across East Sussex and spoken to more than 6,000 people in the past year. Most recently they have been awarded a Gold Green Apple at the 2009 Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice for their work.

Delegates from Smédar authority along with East Sussex County Council visited Friary Gardens in Hastings which is one of five locations in East Sussex which received funding through the compost doctor service to set up a compost demonstration area. The aim of the demonstration sites is to provide an educational resource to show small scale composting to the local community. Friary Gardens is a gardening project involving adults with learning difficulties from the local area.

2nd Interreg IVa exchange visit - March 2009, in Rouen, France.

Delegates from East Sussex County Council visited Rouen in France to learn about Smedar's green garden waste and wood composting scheme. Two centralised composting sites in the outskirts of Rouen were visited.
